The Killing Time Story

Killing Time is where it all started for Allan Dawson and was the defining project that started him on the road as a solo artist and frontman. Having perfected his guitar skills working in several bands during his teens he had also amassed a collection of self written songs and had been lucky enough to learn the art of the studio engineer/producer.

In 1995 aged 20, he teamed up with fellow producer/engineer Martin Wilding (The Alarm, Roger Taylor, James, Jesus Jones, Mansun) at Rockcliffe Studio in North Wales to record a collection of songs intended as songwriters demo's. "Being a guitarist and piano player I had no plans to sing on the album." recalls Allan, "I had three session vocalists booked to perform on the recordings, but one by one they all cancelled either because they were unwell or had other commitments." This forced Allan, who had until now been very comfortable working as a backing singer on stage, to have to take the plunge and sing lead vocals on his own project. This was the turning point which started him on the path of working as a solo artist and the sessions became his first album "Killing Time". The vocal delivery on the album gave producer Martin Wilding cause to remark that Allan had a very identifiable "rock-voice" and urged him to continue working as a vocalist.

He took Martin's advice and took his vocal duties into the live scene, combining his vocal talents with his already finely honed rock guitarist skills to create a highly memorable frontman persona. “I took inspiration from guitarist frontmen out there like Lenny Kravitz, Mark Knopfler, BB King and Dave Gilmour and I thought yeah maybe it is possible to sing and play lead live, but it was a tough wall to climb at first!”
